Old school style - handwritten text creation lesson

Today we are going to take look at how to create a beautiful handwriting fonts. During this lesson we will not be utilizing any software - for creating a letters you will need a pencil, ruler, ink (or marker) and of course a proper eraser.

Handwriting skills could be useful in the development of typography, logos and other design elements. Also, these kind of skills will make any designer feel more comfortable during a quick presentation or a meeting, where due to the lack of laptop in hands he will have to draw something showing the concept or an idea.

Well, let's get it done?

To create these stylish handwriting fonts we will need:
1. pencil
2. ink pen with line thickness of 0.35 mm
3. eraser
4. ruler
5. ink pen with line thickness of 0.2 mm

And of course we will need a sheet of paper (preferably 9 "x 12" (228.6x 304.8 cm) - 1 inch = 2.54 cm, but A4 sheet will also fit our needs - dimensions are 210 x 297)

Please note that you may use any other tools for creating your handwriting fonts. Our main purpose is to make you comfortable when using them. So you can safely take any markers, pens, or any other tools that you are comfortable with. Also you can try to add a bit of individuality and creativity. To be honest, you will even be able to create such handwriting font on the blackboard with chalk.
But, if you still would like to work with sheet of paper - grab a pencil, ballpoint pen or a gel. Let's go!

Step # 1: Creating a lines

Let's draw a lines with the help of our ruler to create a cell for each letter with the small distance between them. Don't press too hard on the pencil. Be sure to use a ruler, so the distance between the letters will be the same.

Step # 2: Making an outlines of letters

You probably noticed, that our letters have geometric style. Feel free to copy this style. But it would be even better if you will try to write the text using the circular letters or a serif.

Step # 3: Drawing contours of the letters

From the name of this step you've probably already guessed that we would do. You can trace the letters using a ruler. But we prefer to do is simply "by hand" because it will give a natural look for our font once completed. Use the pen that is thicker.

Step # 4: Making a small indentation

This is a great style of typography. To do this, simply repeat the same lines in the text.

Try to keep the width of the indentation in the letters the same. In this step, we use a thinner pen. Also, like in the previous step, you can do it without using a ruler, but if you find it easier, you can make a layout at first with a ruler.

Step # 5: Draw a horizontal line

Here is our job starts looking more and more attractive. With the help of our thin pen we need to create a small horizontal lines inside each letter. Make sure that the distance between the lines is kept the same. It is also important not to go beyond the boundaries that have been created in the previous step.

Step # 6: Erase the extra lines

At first, allow the ink to dry out a bit. Now you need to erase all the extra lines created with a pencil. Be careful and don't smudge the ink.

Step # 7: Adding a shadow

Adding shadows to your text will make it look even better.
Within each letter (without touching the boundaries) create small strokes. We did it at the right and top edges. Look on the pic below which probably will be more descriptive.
